Core Web Vitals

What do Core Web Vitals measure, and why does a perfect lab score not guarantee a good one?

They measure three things real visitors experience: how long the main content takes to appear, how quickly the page responds to input, and how much it moves while loading. Lab tools simulate one device on one connection. The score that counts comes from field data across every device your audience actually uses.

The three metrics, in plain terms

Largest Contentful Paint is how long until the biggest thing in the viewport has rendered — usually a hero image, a heading or a block of text. It is a proxy for 'has the page arrived'. Under 2.5 seconds is the good threshold.

Interaction to Next Paint is how long the page takes to visually respond after someone taps or clicks, measured across the whole visit rather than only the first interaction. It replaced First Input Delay because responding quickly once and badly thereafter was passing a test it should have failed. Under 200 milliseconds is good.

Cumulative Layout Shift is how much content moves during loading, weighted by how much of the viewport moved and how far. It is the metric behind tapping a button that turns into a different button. Under 0.1 is good.

All three are thresholded at the 75th percentile of visits, which is a deliberately unforgiving choice: a quarter of your visitors must not be having a bad time.

Why the lab score misleads

Lab tools run one page on one simulated device and network. Field data — what Chrome reports from real visits — spans every device, connection and geography in your actual audience, including the four-year-old mid-range phone on a slow connection that a fast laptop simulation never represents.

The gap is routinely large. A site scoring well in the lab can fail on field data because real visitors arrive with a cold cache, a busy CPU, third-party scripts that were mocked out, and a network that is not a clean throttle profile.

Field data also lags. It is a rolling window, so a fix takes weeks to show up, which makes the lab useful for iteration and useless for judgement. Use the lab to find causes; use the field to decide whether you have a problem.

This is also why we do not quote Core Web Vitals figures for projects in our portfolio. A number measured on one machine says nothing about the phone your customer is holding, and publishing it would be a claim we cannot support.

What actually moves each one

LCP is usually the hero image or a render-blocking dependency. Serve the right size in a modern format, preload it, do not lazy-load the thing that is above the fold, and stop the font or stylesheet in the head from blocking the paint. Server response time sets the floor for everything after it.

INP is almost always JavaScript occupying the main thread. The fix is to ship less of it, break long tasks apart, and stop doing expensive work synchronously in an event handler. A framework hydrating the entire page before anything is interactive is a common cause.

CLS is images and embeds without reserved space, web fonts swapping metrics, and content injected above existing content. Set explicit width and height, reserve space for anything asynchronous, and never insert a banner above content someone is already reading.

None of these are exotic. The reason sites fail is not that the fixes are hard; it is that performance was measured after the build rather than treated as a constraint during it.

How much do they matter for ranking?

Less than the effort spent arguing about them, and more than zero. They are a real signal, and a weak one compared to relevance and content quality. Being fast will not rank a page that does not answer the question.

Where they matter most is as a tiebreaker between comparable results, and as a conversion factor independent of search entirely. A page that shifts while loading loses people regardless of where it ranked.

The honest framing for a build: performance is a user-experience requirement with a search side effect, not a ranking tactic. Treat it as a budget during development — an image weight ceiling, a JavaScript ceiling, content in the initial HTML — and the metrics look after themselves.

How we have used it

Swift MVP delivers hosted sites inside a 24 to 72 hour window, which only works if performance is structural rather than remedial. Static prerendering means pages arrive as complete HTML rather than being assembled in the browser, and shared schema validation keeps the client bundle from growing a second copy of the rules.

The same discipline shapes our immersive work from the opposite direction. Hasan Zone runs a 3D gallery of 111 songs in a browser with nothing to install, which is only possible because the download, frame and memory budgets were design constraints rather than something measured afterwards.

COMMON QUESTIONS /

Questions people also ask

What is a good Core Web Vitals score?

LCP under 2.5 seconds, INP under 200 milliseconds and CLS under 0.1, each at the 75th percentile of real visits. Passing means all three are in the good band — a strong LCP does not offset a failing INP.

Why does my lab score differ from Search Console?

Search Console reports field data from real Chrome visits on real devices over a rolling window; a lab tool simulates one device and connection on demand. The field data is the one that counts, and it lags your changes by weeks.

Did INP replace First Input Delay?

Yes, in March 2024. FID only measured the delay before the first interaction was processed, which let pages that responded quickly once and slowly thereafter pass. INP measures responsiveness across the whole visit and is a far harder metric to fake.

Will fixing Core Web Vitals improve my rankings?

Marginally, and only where everything else is comparable. They are a genuine but small signal next to relevance, content quality and links. The stronger argument for fixing them is that slow, unstable pages lose visitors before search is involved at all.
